Founded in 1862, Stockmann is a Nordic department store retailer with operations in Finland and the Baltics. For more than a decade, key parts of the business ran on Oracle, including Oracle EBS and Oracle Retail Merchandise System, in an environment shaped by a larger retail footprint and an earlier phase of growth. As the business changed, the systems still mattered, but the cost of maintaining them became harder to justify.

That created a familiar enterprise problem. The business still depended on the Oracle systems, but the support model no longer fitted as well as it once had. Stockmann needed a way to reduce costs without adding risk to the systems that remained central to day-to-day operations.

Challenge: A long-running Oracle environment with costs that no longer fit

Stockmann was managing a large Oracle footprint in a retail market that had become more demanding and less forgiving. After years of growth and complexity, the company was left with an Oracle environment designed for a larger business than the one it now needed to support. Oracle EBS and Oracle Retail Merchandise System were still deeply embedded in operations, but the cost of maintaining that estate had become less cost efficient.

That is where many organizations get stuck. The application is not broken, but the economics no longer make sense. For Stockmann, the pressure was clear: lower support costs, protect business-critical systems, and avoid introducing unnecessary disruption at a time when continuity mattered just as much as savings.

Approach: Reassessing support through the lens of business risk

The question was never just how to spend less. It was how to do so responsibly. Stockmann needed a support model that matched the realities of its business rather than forcing the business to conform to someone else’s timetable. Any change had to preserve stability, improve responsiveness, and give the company confidence that its Oracle systems would continue to perform as expected.

That meant looking beyond price alone. A lower-cost option would only matter if it came with the discipline, reliability, and speed needed to support a complex Oracle environment. For organizations facing similar choices, that is often the real calculation: not whether to reduce support spend, but whether it is possible to do so without creating new operational exposure.

Solution: Structured, dependable support for critical Oracle systems

Working with Spinnaker Support since 2019, Stockmann found a partner that was helpful, easy to work with, systematic, and reliable. Improvements were visible almost immediately, with gains in speed and efficiency showing up early in the relationship. That mattered because the Oracle systems remained central to the business.

Spinnaker Support brought a more practical support model to that environment; one designed to help organizations sustain existing systems without forcing unnecessary change. Instead of treating support as a passive renewal decision, Stockmann was able to take a more active role in how its Oracle estate would be supported, managed, and carried forward.

Results: Meaningful savings with continued operational confidence

By moving away from a high-cost support model, Stockmann created an opportunity for significant savings while maintaining confidence in its Oracle environment. Just as important, the company gained a support experience marked by responsiveness, consistency, and ease of collaboration. There were no major issues reported, and value appeared quickly.

The result was not simply a lower bill. It was a more credible way to support business-critical Oracle systems in a changing retail environment, one that reduced cost pressure while preserving continuity and creating more flexibility for future IT decisions. For organizations still carrying large enterprise applications that continue to do their job, that is the real takeaway: it is possible to lower support costs without disrupting the systems the business still depends on.
