How independent third-party support gives Oracle customers more time, flexibility and control

Many Oracle customers assume that staying on a stable Oracle release means staying with Oracle Support. But the database can remain in place while the support provider changes. Moving from Oracle Support to an independent third-party provider does not require an upgrade or migration.

For organizations that are not ready to upgrade but no longer see sufficient value in their current support model, this creates another path forward.

Defining Independent Third-Party Support

Independent third-party support gives organizations a practical foundation for operating outside a vendor’s prescribed support and upgrade roadmap. Rather than upgrading, migrating or renewing simply to maintain support, organizations can continue running stable, business-critical Oracle software with expert support from an independent provider.

Depending on the environment, that support can include issue resolution, tax and regulatory updates, security advisory services, operational guidance, and expertise across complex and highly customized systems.

The value extends beyond reducing support costs. Moving away from the vendor’s support model can give organizations more time to evaluate their options, preserve critical systems while other priorities move forward, and decide when modernization creates enough business value to justify the investment and disruption.

When the Fit Is Strong

Independent third-party support tends to fit organizations where several conditions line up.

  • The environment is stable, and the functionality that the business needs is already in place.
  • There is no compelling near-term case for an upgrade.
  • The organization wants better service, lower costs, or more flexibility in its roadmap.
  • Licensing rights have been reviewed and understood.

When those conditions are present, changing the support model can create real value without changing the underlying system at all.

The Value Goes Beyond the Savings

Cost is usually the first thing organizations notice. Gartner’s Market Guide for Independent Third-Party Software Support of Megavendors says organizations can reduce software support costs by approximately 50 percent compared to publisher support.

Independent third-party support can free up significant budget for a PostgreSQL pilot, a stronger security program, cloud initiatives, other modernization priorities, or simply a reserve for the next major decision. What happens with that freed-up budget usually matters more than the percentage saved alone.

Savings can create value today. The greater strategic benefit is having more time and capacity to decide what should happen tomorrow.

Security Does Not Stay Behind

Moving away from Oracle Support does not mean giving up on security. Vendor patches are one part of a much broader security program. “Security teams have measured patch rates for so long that somewhere along the way, the metric became the strategy,” said Craig Savage, vice president of cybersecurity at Spinnaker Support. “Patching is one security control. It’s not a security strategy.”

A layered approach to security includes exposure management to identify vulnerabilities before they are exploited, configuration management to eliminate risk caused by outdated settings, and compensating controls for moments when vendor patches are unavailable or inappropriate. It also includes continuous monitoring for suspicious activity and system hardening to reduce the attack surface proactively. Governance ties it together, keeping policies and controls consistent as the environment changes. Spinnaker Support delivers that defense-in-depth philosophy through Spinnaker Shield™, combining continuous assessment, hardening, monitoring and compensating controls into a single security posture.

The presence or absence of a vendor patch does not determine an organization’s entire security posture. Each risk should be evaluated based on the vulnerability, the environment, existing protections, and the organization’s broader security strategy.

Compliance Stays with the Organization

Changing support models does not change an organization’s compliance obligations. Whether the requirements involve PCI DSS, HIPAA, SOX, GDPR or another framework, the organization remains responsible for maintaining a secure, compliant environment. A strong independent third-party support partner helps adapt security and compliance processes to the new support model and documents how existing controls continue to address risk. Compliance responsibility stays with the organization throughout.

Security and compliance deserve the same evaluation regardless of which path an organization takes.

Choosing the Right Provider

Not every independent support provider is built the same way. Organizations evaluating this path should look closely at these criteria.

  • Deep Oracle expertise, including engineers with extensive experience supporting complex and highly customized environments.
  • Named or dedicated engineers who are responsible for your business.
  • A response model tied to clear, enforceable service-level agreements.
  • A clearly defined scope of what is covered under the contract.
  • Security capabilities that extend well beyond basic patching.
  • Compliance experience with the specific frameworks the organization operates under.
  • Deep knowledge of Oracle licensing terms, which are complex and easy to misread.
  • Service guarantees backed by real penalties or remedies.
  • The ability to support future optimization and modernization initiatives alongside the current environment.

Spinnaker Support has offered these capabilities since 2008, working with Oracle customers who want an alternative to standard vendor support without giving up security, reliability or a clear path to evolve on their own schedule.

Building Room to Decide Later

This approach gives organizations the stability to run critical systems reliably while creating room to optimize the current environment and evaluate what comes next. The organization can decide, at its own pace, when to upgrade or modernize elsewhere in the estate. Changing the support model creates room to make that decision well without forcing it immediately.

None of this means independent third-party support fits every Oracle customer. Organizations that need vendor-delivered upgrades or specific services tied to Oracle Support may reach a different decision.

The database platform and its support model are two separate decisions. Treating them as one, the way most renewal cycles do, reduces the number of viable options available to enterprise organizations. Evaluating cost, security, compliance, and long-term flexibility independently can lead to a more informed decision.

An Oracle Estate Assessment from Spinnaker Support can help determine whether a given environment is a strong candidate for independent third-party support, and how that decision fits into the organization’s longer-term roadmap.
